Tennessee Equality Project is a statewide organization dedicated to promoting and sustaining the equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons in the State of Tennessee through the establishment of fair and equitable laws protecting these rights and the elimination of laws that would seek to counter this effort.
TEP was founded on June 15, 2004 by members of our community in Nashville, TN in an effort to organize a group of committed citizens who believe in protecting the rights of GLBT persons in Tennessee.
Marriage equality brought us into being: The Tennessee Equality Project was formed in 2004 to fight the marriage discrimination constitutional amendment that was working its way through the Legislature at the time and eventually passed at the ballot in 2006.
Fighting at the Ballot: We formed the “Fairness” ballot measure committee to fight the amendment at the ballot with the “Vote No on 1″ campaign. While we didn’t win, the campaign gave us more visibility and contacts throughout the state–valuable gains that have helped us in the Legislature.
